'Unequal' Treaty of Nanking (1842)

The text of the captioned treaty is available here.
It is hard not to acknowledge the inherent unfairness of the stipulations therein.
Whether or not such treaty was unequal from the standpoint of the exercise of the signatory powers' jus tractatuum (whether or not they were equally unconditioned in, or coerced into, concluding the treaty) is another matter entirely, and hinges on this often debated question: do countries defeated in war, or at a great military disadvantage, ever enter into armistices and/or peace treaties freely or willingly?
